A denture is a removable dental appliance that serves as a replacement for missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. Dentures are made to resemble your natural teeth and may also improve your smile.
Complete and partial dentures are both available at West Jordan Smiles. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used to replace some missing natural teeth. There are two options for complete dentures. They are either conventional or immediate. A conventional type of denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue and bone have healed (this usually takes 6 to 8 weeks). The patient will go without teeth during this time. This option usually results in a more accurate impression and better fitting denture.
Immediate dentures are made prior to the removal of any remaining teeth and are then placed immediately after the teeth have been remove. This option prevents the patient from having to go without teeth during the 6-8 week healing process. In time, the tissue and bone will shrink and heal. Eventually, after the tissue is completely healed, a hard acrylic reline will be usually necessary.
Dentures are very durable appliances and should last many years. Due to normal wear the dentures may occasionally need to be repaired, readjusted, or remade.
